Sensory Therapy

I keep talking about OT for the kids at It's A Sensory World, and don't really talk about why they go. First off, they LOVE it. Their therapists are incredible and perfect with them. If they could go everyday and never leave, they would. If they could live there, they would. Between the Sensory Gym and the immense help it has given them over the last 2 and a half months, it has been a life saver. We go every Friday for an hour. The twins see Ms Ashley and Adam sees Mr. Matt.

Claire is working on how to cope with and feel better about clothes that touch her. Underwear, socks, pants, pretty much all clothes. And while she still has her good and bad days, it is helping her. She has actually volunteered to wear socks a couple days, which is incredible.

Colin's goals at therapy are to help him with getting out some of that energy as well as practicing speaking up and saying what he thinks and feels, rather than letting all boil up until he's so angry he can't control it. It's helped him not let Claire do all his talking for him. They have helped him so much with this and it's made him more confident at school, and now he has LOTS of friends... but even bigger than that, he feels confident that he can make friends and is doing so much better socially and with his anxiety. When we first started, he was crying constantly that no one liked him and that his teacher was always upset with him. Now he's turning into this opinionated, confident, popular kid who doesn't feel the need to fly off the handle and bite or hit. I'm so, so impressed with his progress.

Adam is adoring therapy also. He is working on impulse control, transitioning from task to task without drama... or at least, minimal drama, and being able to sit in his chair without falling out. You might think this is an easy thing to learn, but for some kids it's not that easy. At his own requests, he's put one of his goals of therapy as learning to tie his shoes as well. He's learning so much and it is definitely making a difference for him.
